In this special interview, we reflect on the challenges overcome, the legacy carried forward, and what lies ahead – from new brands and digital growth to exciting anniversary celebrations.
How does it feel to be celebrating 160 years in business this year?
It’s very special! Reaching 160 years is something very few businesses achieve, and we feel extremely proud to still be here serving our community after all that time. When you look back at the history of the business it has survived fires, economic downturns and huge changes in retail, so it really is a testament to the generations before us and the loyal customers who have supported us along the way.
What do you think has contributed to surviving so long in what can be a highly competitive trade?
I think it comes down to three things: relationships, reputation and adapting over time. Jewellery is a very personal purchase, so trust is incredibly important. Over the years we’ve built strong relationships with generations of families in the region. At the same time we’ve never stood still – each generation has evolved the business while still keeping the core values of quality, service and craftsmanship.
Have you experienced any major challenges, and how did you overcome them?
Like any long-standing business we’ve faced our share of challenges. Historically the business survived two major fires, wars and periods of economic hardship, and each time the family rebuilt and continued. More recently the retail landscape has changed dramatically with online shopping, changing consumer habits and the ups and downs after COVID. For us the key has been focusing on what makes us different – personal service, expertise and being part of the community. We’re very much a traditional jewellery business offering services alongside jewellery, watches and gifts.
How do you see your business evolving in the next 3-5 years?
The jewellery industry is always evolving, so we’re constantly looking at ways to grow and move with trends and technology while still honouring our heritage. Over the next few years we’ll continue strengthening our online presence, bringing in interesting jewellery brands and maintaining the personalised service that independent family businesses are known for.
How has your business positively impacted your community?
Being part of the community for so long means we’ve shared in many of life’s important moments – engagements, weddings, anniversaries and family milestones. It’s incredibly rewarding seeing multiple generations of the same families coming back to us, and hearing customers talk about special jewellery they bought from the store many years ago. We also support local events and organisations where we can, because our community has supported us for 160 years.
What is some of the best feedback you’ve received?
One of the nicest things we hear is when customers say they came in because their parents or grandparents shopped with us. That kind of generational trust means a lot. Customers also often comment on the friendly atmosphere in store and the genuine care our team takes in helping them find the right gift or item.
What do customers appreciate most about what you do / how you do it?
I think people appreciate that we take the time to listen and help them find something meaningful. Jewellery purchases often mark important life moments, so it’s not just about selling a product – it’s about helping someone choose something that will be treasured for years.
What motivates you every day to keep working on your business?
Knowing that we’re continuing a legacy that began over 160 years ago is incredibly motivating. But beyond that, it’s really the people – our customers and our team. Helping someone celebrate an important moment or restore a treasured heirloom is very rewarding.
How do you maintain a work-life balance, especially as a business owner?
To be honest I don’t think I’ve quite nailed that yet! I’m very lucky because I genuinely love what I do, but like most business owners the line between work and life can get a bit blurred. It’s something I’m always trying to improve!
What advice would you give to others aspiring to run a business?
Be prepared to work hard and stay adaptable. The business world changes constantly, so being willing to learn and evolve is essential. Also, never underestimate the importance of good relationships – with your customers, your team and your wider community.
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of business?
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with friends and family, good food and wine, and making the most of the Central Otago lifestyle.
Have you worked with other businesses or professionals to help develop your organisation?
Yes absolutely. Partnerships with jewellery designers, suppliers and other professionals are very important to us. They help us bring interesting products and ideas to our customers while continuing to grow the business.
What does a successful collaboration or partnership look like to you?
For me the best partnerships are built on trust, shared values and a similar sense of style and taste. When everyone involved is focused on quality and great service, the end result is always better for the customer.
Are there any current or upcoming projects or partnerships you’re excited about?
