Whether you’re there to play, cheer, or simply enjoy the social vibes, the club prides itself on bringing people together and making them feel at home.

Our very own team member, Chris Sherburd has served eight years as treasurer for the board of trustees, playing an important role in the club’s continued success.

“The amount of work, effort and voluntary hours so many people put in is inspiring and infectious,” said Chris. “It’s the people, culture and atmosphere of the club that keeps me there. People helping people purely for the love of the game and the club, without expectation of anything in return.”

A dedicated group of coaches, managers, support staff and over 100 volunteers work hard behind the scenes to ensure the club’s junior and senior rugby programmes run smoothly.  More than 300 junior players are part of the action, supported by families and friends who fill up Miller Park on game days!

The club celebrated a year of milestones in 2024, with its 140th birthday celebration on Kings Birthday weekend, followed by being awarded the title of New Zealand Rugby Club of the Year.  You can watch a video of the club’s  on YouTube here.

Another milestone was the Premier Men’s team winning the Banner for the first time in the competition’s 40+ year history. The club also featured in the New Zealand Rugby video, the ‘Future of Rugby Clubs,’ showcasing its journey over the years. Watch the video here.

Going forward, the top focus is on keeping rugby alive and kicking in the greater Green Island area.  “Our goal is to keep growing, making sure our club is a place people feel proud to belong to,” said Chris.

“We’re planning more upgrades, such as improved field lighting, expanded outdoor hospitality spaces, and increased transport capability for our players.

“Thanks to the NZ Rugby Club of the Year prize, we have $5,000 to invest in some of these projects.” Whether you want to hit the fields, lend a hand or cheer from the sidelines, Green Island is always keen to grow its community.

The clubhouse facilities are used for all kinds of events. For more information, visit the club’s Facebook page or email greenislandrugby@gmail.com
